Johns Hopkins Covid 19 Map
What was your name,
number ninety-nine thousand, two hundred ten?
Was it Akmed or Chunhua,
Mustafa or Mike? Did your friends
call you Anna Maria or George?
Were you mother-blessed “Emma”
or street-baptized Blade?
Were you scared as you died
alone in a hospital hall,
untended among too many to save?
Maybe you got a too-scarce ventilator,
but though hovering, masked faces
checked oxygen levels and monitors,
could you hear the beeping stop?
Did you see some of those faces cry?
Did you slip away in your room
at home, your family afraid to touch,
to kiss, to hold your trembling hand?
Were you first of your family to go?
Were you unnamed on admittance?
Was the street your home?
Did you end up with a toe tag,
boxed in wood, unknown, unmourned?
You, number ninety-nine thousand, two hundred ten,
you’re lost to me here in tallies of countries.
You shed an old story or stopped midway
when you became a number.
Most important, dear human, please,
say that you were loved, were loved
before Corona took your name.

Fulfilling a lifetime dream in 1999, I moved to the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina. I lived on the side of a mountain in the woods for seventeen years. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Living among nature, seeing red wolf, bobcat, coyote and fox in my yard was breathtaking. Hiking, taking flying lessons, exploring watercolors again was invigorating. Living in a small town where “everybody knows your name” fit me to a tee.
Just before I turned seventy, I knew it was time to move closer to family. My daughter was living in Maine so I sold my beloved mountain home and came here. It was a huge adjustment moving to a city, although I was fortunate to find a home surrounded by woods at its outskirts. There are deer, turkeys, coyotes, fox in my yard often. I am grateful.
I had just been in Maine a year when Covid-19 began. It has not been easy to meet people here, to find my group, although my years living solo in the mountains has been invaluable training for these isolating times. I miss my lifelong volunteer work and hope to find a place where I can volunteer. Fortunately, I have lots of interests and have family nearby.

I am amazed at how much I took for granted pre-pandemic; occasionally going out to restaurants, cafes, museums, libraries and other socializing events and places. I now realize I was treating these special occasions with a blasé attitude, never realizing their value in keeping me on an even psychological keel. While I have always understood how fragile my psyche can be, this semi-isolation that most of us have been enduring for the better part of a year has really taken its toll and I’m better off than most. I’m able to go to work each day thereby supplying me human interaction with someone other than my spouse who spends most of her days at home. I accept that my pandemic existence is better than many of my fellow human beings which only makes me wonder how people who are really struggling financially as well as socially are able to cope.
I hope this pandemic finally puts to rest the hoary cliché and misguided notion that has infected the American psyche since before the American Revolution; that we are a nation of “rugged individuals”. Americans desperately cling to this notion that we can “pull ourselves up by our boot-straps” without help from others. This pandemic has demonstrated the utter falsity of that notion. Whether or not we want to believe it we are all interdependent. There has been no greater illustrator of that than the pandemic.

The irony of social distancing and enforced solitude is how much it has reinforced the truth of our deep connection to each other and to the natural world. In this country we pride ourselves on our individualism, and on the material benefits of competition, which to a great extent depend on extractions from nature. For the last several weeks, in contrast, we have engaged in loving interactions with our grandchildren and dear friends, remotely but meaningfully. And we have taken long walks in natural settings where it almost seems as if plants now have the benefit of more fresh air and animals have been liberated from their previous sequestration.
