Polcari's Coffee Bag

Coffee
A friend of mine was leading a discussion group. "What, from your everyday life, would you like someone in the future to know about?" This is my answer. At some point during the dark and isolating days of the pandemic, another friend went down to Boston and brought me back a bag of coffee, Italian roast, from my favorite store in my old neighborhood, Boston's North End. I love the bag's design, so unassuming. I love the coffee, so fragrant, so rich. I love the store, with the same guys who were working there fifteen or so years ago. I love the gift of it, a small token of light and thoughtfulness in a bleak time.

Flags--Ukraine
Solidarity
My friend Victoria Kostadinova created this flag. She and others have been flying Ukrainian flags above the Mount Joy Orchard on Munjoy Hill at sunrise and sunset. I spotted her flying it early on March 1 after I dropped my son off at the East End Community School. I posted this photo on Facebook and Instagram and it was shared hundreds of times. I forgot to post it on Twitter, but Rep. Chellie Pingree's account shared it there. My great-grandmother was born in Sortavala, Finland, and when she was a child the Russians invaded and burned the family homestead and sauna. What a tremendous waste. My great-grandmother later immigrated to the United States. Portland Stands with Ukraine.

Making Coffee, part 2
Household sounds
Coffee making paraphernalia
Part 2 of my recording of the simple act of making coffee. In this installment, you can hear the water boiling in the copper kettle on the electric range. Listen to the way the sounds change as the water gets hotter, and then falls off. I make coffee by pouring it through a paper filter fitted into a cone.
