About us

Chartered in 1867, Portland Public Library (PPL) is Maine’s oldest and largest public library system. The library offers over 300,000 books, audiobooks, musical recordings, movies, digital resources, and archival materials.

PPL's Portland Contemporary Archives project is part of the Maine Contemporary Archives project, a collaborative, statewide initiative whose original mission was to document life in Maine during the COVID-19 pandemic. The scope of the project has expanded and we now actively seek submissions from community members documenting all aspects of daily modern life.

The project’s Omeka sites are supported by the Maine State Library, using federal CARES Act funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
